IQA - Institute of Quarrying Australia

Administration

The Institute of Quarrying Australia is a company limited by guarantee. Its functions through a Council, supported by State and Territory branch committees.

The Council is an elected body headed by a President. Elections are held annually, usually at the National Conference. Council members serve a one year term, and the President remains in office for two years, unless otherwise determined. A deputy president and five vice presidents are also elected, together with a nominated representative of each of the constituent Branches. Other Council members are the five previous past presidents and two representatives of the Supplier’s Group. The Council then has the power to appoint up to five additional members.

The full Council generally meets four times a year. These meetings are held in various regional centres to allow local members to meet with and discuss matters of significance with Council members. A secretariat staff, head by a CEO, administers financial services, membership and other developments throughout the year, supported by Council members, and through access to legal, financial and other resources.

The branches and sub-branches are also run by elected committees. They organise regular branch meetings (with guest speakers), visits to places of interest, seminars and social events. Each Branch is given the opportunity, on a rotating basis, to organise and run the National Conference.

A number of important committees report their activities to the Council. The President appoints members to committees, taking into account individuals’ strengths as well as location. These committees include:-

  • Products (Education and Technical, Events and IT)
  • Services (Marketing and Membership, Awards and Heritage)
  • Finance
  • Corporate Governance
