MEMBERSHIPS

Joining the Institute

Membership of The Institute of Quarrying Australia is open to everyone with appropriate qualifications and/or experience in, or supplying to, the surface mineral extractive and processing industries. This includes hard-rock quarrying, sand and gravel (both land-based and marine-dredged), recycling, special sands, cement, lime, gypsum, clays, coal, slate, asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and concrete products. The Institute also embraces all the professional and consultancy services which support the industry, and there is a special section reserved for those engaged in the supply of plant, equipment, materials and services.

Along with its broad industry base, Institute membership reflects the multi-disciplinary nature of the business and all levels of specialisation. Members include geologists, surveyors, engineers, production managers, quarry and site managers, commercial and financial managers, technical and laboratory staff, landscape architects and environmental specialists, sales and service engineers, health and safety officers/inspectors, planning officers and many others in positions of responsibility.

The Institute encourages a diverse membership, so that members mix with people who have knowledge and experience in every aspect of the industry. There is a joining fee and a modest annual subscription. You can apply for membership through The Institute directly as below or contact your State branch secretary.

You will find local branch secretaries through Institute members in your company or region. Branch secretaries can recommend members to act as supporters of your application, and can supply information on local Institute activities.

The application form requires your qualifications details (if applicable), and industry experience and responsibilities. This information determines the your membership you grade. You can progress throughout your career, starting with the entry grade of Student, and leading to the highest grade of Fellow.

The Corporate grades of Fellow and Member are reserved for those with recognised qualifications and at least three years industry experience. Applicants without requisite experience or qualifications who are directly employed within the industry are given the non-Corporate grade of Associate. Applicants may enter any grade (according to their qualifications and experience) at any time during their career.

Along with their membership grade (and the designatory letters associated with corporate grades), some members - those employed by companies supplying plant, equipment, materials and services - can join the Supply Industry Section. This group is the voice of the industry’s suppliers. It also supports the funding of many Institute activities.
