Quarrying Statistics

Picture courtesy of Quarry Magazine The following data are designed to give an overview of the level of quarrying activity for aggregates used in the building and construction industries in each Australian State and the Northern Territory. The TOTAL figure for Australia is an addition of the data from individual States and the Northern Territory. The data in TABLE 1 shows the quantity and value of production (sales) of aggregates for financial year ended June 30, 2001 as well as information on the number of quarries and number of people directly employed in quarries across Australia. Similarly, data for the financial years ending June 30, 2000 and June 30, 1999 are shown in TABLEs 2 and 3 respectively.

It is important to note that there is no single source of statistical information in Australia for the quarrying industry. The information in the tables has been compiled from the State Mines Departments or Natural Resource Departments in each of the Australian States and the Northern Territory. There are inconsistencies in the method, definitions and extent of reporting of quarry output between the states and not all output is reported by industry. In Western Australia the State Government only compiles quarrying statistics for those quarries that operate on mining tenements. Quarry output from freehold land is not recorded and an estimate has necessarily been made. Consequently, some subjective assessments have been made in the interpretation of data and compilation of the statistics.
