Technical Papers Issued by the Technical Committee of The Institute of Quarrying Australia Introduction The Institute of Quarrying Australia (IQA) is a professional body which unites people of the industry throughout Australia. It is an educator, a conduit for knowledge and an advocate for standards and legislation.
Quarries provide earth materials such as sand, gravel, crushed rock and clay that we process into raw material inputs for buildings and construction, agriculture and industrial processes. Approximately 90% of the output from quarries in Australia is used in the building and construction industries. In determining or identifying the competencies needed in the industry the Technical Committee looks at them from two perspectives: firstly the needs of the site; and then, the needs of the individuals employed at, or serving the site. It is in this respect that the Technical Committee looks at what topics and issues are of major concern to both the individual and the site in deciding to publish its Technical Update Reports. The IQA Technical Committee consists of practicing quarry professionals who are involved in the various sectors of the extractive industries in Australia. The IQA, as the professional quarry industry body in Australia, issues these update reports in the interests of professional development and as an aid to ensure ongoing competency at the work site.
