RII40120 Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations

Course Overview

This course provides the skills and knowledge to work in supervisory roles within the resources sector, such as team leader in a quarry or open cut mine.  It covers a broad range of skills including applying safety management plans, leading and coordinating staff.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification. Learners should have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to participate in training.

Pathways

On completion, participants may undertake job roles such as team leader or supervisor, or continue into higher qualifications such as Diploma of Surface Operations Management. 

Qualification Structure

To complete the course, learners must be complete a total of 13 units of competency as follows:

  • 4 core units
  • 9 elective units

  • RIIRIS401D Apply site risk management system

Selecting electives

The IQA works with a number of RTOs for the delivery of the Certificate III. The IQA (with support of the RTO) can help you determine which electives units will meet your needs and the needs of your employer. Elective units should be selected according to job-role and state-based competency requirements as there are variations between states.

Example of state-based requirements 

In Queensland, Site Senior Executives on sites with 6-20 employees must hold the following:

  • Certificate IV in Surface Extraction Operations, including
  • RIIRIS501E Implement and maintain management systems to control risk; and
  • BSBWHS521 Ensure a safe workplace

If blasting is to occur, they must also hold: 

  • RIIBLA301E Conduct surface shotfiring operations
  • RIIBLA205E Store, handle and transport explosives
  • RIIBLA305E Conduct secondary blasting
    (or recognised safe drilling and blasting course, or shot-firers license)
