Careers in Quarrying?

There are many options and careers available in the quarrying industry. Depending on the size of the operation or site, each quarry will have different levels of responsibility, involvement, and accountability for the various roles. Day to day operators form the major part of the quarry workforce of a site. They are the people who operate the fixed and mobile equipment on site and ensure that the production is maintained throughout the work shift. Quarries also depend on a range of technical experts from time to time such as engineers, geologists, lab technicians and environment scientists.

The type of materials produced, and the size of the quarry determines the roles required. These generally include:

  • Quarry Manager: whose role is to lead and manage the quarry as a whole, incorporating responsibility for safety, production, maintenance, pit development, people, sales, etc. The scope of the Quarry Manager's role will vary greatly depending on the company and size of the quarry.
  • Quarry Supervisor: this role oversees and directs the work of others or activities, either in the quarry as a whole, or in various assigned processes.
  • Leading Hand or Foreman: generally has the responsibility for a small team or crew. This role ensures that the 'on the ground' work is done safely, and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
  • Operators: Plant and equipment operators are the core of the quarry workforce.  Their contribution is essential to the extractive process as they are responsible for operating heavy machinery and equipment used on the site.

Due to the variety of equipment that is operated on a site, maintenance personnel are required, and are generally categorised by their specialisation, i.e. electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, fitter, boilermaker etc.
