To recognise the best prepared Portfolio of Evidence submitted to a Registered Training Organisation in support of the applicant seeking accreditation for either: Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma in surface extractive operations against an Australian national resources and infrastructure industries training package.

Mick Walton

Michael's portfolio is a combination of evidence from four different employer organisations (Thiess, Chevron, Bechtel & Boral) over two different jurisdictions (NSW & WA) which he has moulded into an expansive and diverse coverage of
evidence for each unit.

This gives a unique and high quality portfolio which demonstrates Michael's RPL at the high level required for an Advanced Diploma, and it was put together under the difficult circumstances of his fly-in fly-out employment at the Wheatstone project in WA, while living in Sydney.

Added to this in the portfolio addendum is extensive evidence of Michael's commitment to on-going learning and many supporting testimonials.

CAT Continuous Improvement Award

An individual's contribution in improving and evolving their Australian extractive business through structured and measured continuous improvements in a work related activity.

Brad Donald

Brad Donald inherited a wireless GPS fleet tracking system in late 2013 and immediately worked on identifying and implementing other opportunity for the technology. The panel were particularly impressed with his approach and personal passion and commitment to continuous improvement as Brad up skilled himself in the technology before planning and implementing several clear initiatives. These covered fuel burn, driver behaviour, safety and maintenance savings and were measured, tracked and reported. Each delivered tangible, significant additional benefit by maximising the basic wireless GPS technology. Brad is now working on further opportunities that will be introduced in early 2016.

Hitachi Individual Safety Award

To recognise an individual’s contribution to the advancement of OH&S in the quarry industry.

Blake Ardrey

Blake’s submissions details a new initiative of an Isolation Lock-out Room which is situated in close proximity to the fixed plant and act as a central hub for the isolation switches. The isolation room would allow personnel to lock out various plant equipment in the one location.
The judges of the committee judged Blake’s submission to be highly effective and transferable with a strong evidence of outcome and cost effectiveness.

IQA Gold Hard Hat Site Safety Award

To recognise a site’s contribution to the advancement of OH&S in the quarry industry.

Richard Tomkins

Boral Seaham Quarry looked to reduce the risk of injury, fatigue and discomfort when inspecting screens through the use of cameras.  After an initial trial with a stick a remote-controlled car was created.  The team found further benefit by accessing chutes and other hard-to-reach places with the device.  The judging panel was very impressed in that this approach eliminated hazards associated with confined and restricted spaces and represented a novel approach to improve a very common activity.

IQA Service Award

To recognise a member who has given outstanding service to the Institute and the industry over many years.

Tony Ward

Tony Ward - Tony has been an IQA member for 33 years. He has held every position on the South Australian Branch committee including Branch chair and secretary, and has been instrumental in the organisation of each National Conference held in SA. He has held influential positions within the quarrying industry and has been a valuable mentor to many in the industry.

Steven Della Bona

Steven Della-Bona – Steven has been in the industry for 30 years and has been an IQA member for 16 years. He joined the WA Branch committee immediately and has held many positions including Branch chair, which he currently holds. Steven enthusiastically promotes the quarrying industry, and the IQA in Western Australia, and has been instrumental in the growth of IQA membership in WA.

This is the IQA highest award. An Honorary Fellow is a member who has made a significant contribution to the Institute or to the industry, or holds a position in the Institute or the Industry which merits such recognition.

Peter Duffy

National Retracom Sydenham Hill Industry Award

The Retracom Sydenham Hill Industry Award is a state based industry service award, recognising the contribution of an individual to the industry in general, at any level of leadership displaying characteristics and qualities consistent with the award criteria.

Grant Menhennett

Grant Menhennett is the inaugural winner of the Retracom Sydenham Hill Industry Award for his contribution to the quarrying industry at any management level.
Grant was judged to be outstanding in his field as well as generous with his mentoring of others.

Sandvik Best Technical Paper

The best technical paper on the quarrying industry presented at an IQA meeting, published in the Quarry magazine or presented at an IQA or outside seminar or conference during the 12 months to 31 July, and includes papers submitted by that date for the 2015 IQA Conference

Brad Doyle

Brad Doyle’s presentation on extracting sand from the Clarence River was clear, concise and technical in terms of the research required to ensure that the project was a success.

Above all, the judges rated the presentation highly based on the uniqueness and originality of the project. After much deliberation and negotiation by all judges, it is clear that Brad Doyle is the winner of the best technical paper award.

Richard Tomkins

The SCE - Rocktec Innovation Award  recognises an individual’s contribution to excellence and innovation in the quarry industry. The judging panel was unanimous in recognising Richard Tomkin's application of  for its simplicity and innovation.

The use of a camera for preventative maintenance inspections in screens and chutes and other confined spaces reduces the need for personnel to be exposed to the risks associated with confined spaces and difficult places to access.

Trimble Loadrite Lean Principles Award

A single or on-going demonstration of the application of ‘lean principles’ (preserving value with less work) by an individual in an Australian aggregates extractive business.

Rodney Kazem

Rodney Kazem’s (Boral Linwood Quarry) submission demonstrated the use of a number of Lean Principles over many facets of the operation. He was able to quantify large benefits to the site in Overall Equipment Effectiveness with an improvement in OEE in the order of 30% in a 12 month period. Further benefits include: review of crushing plant efficiencies and availability, decrease production defects and optimise product quality, increase site testing capability and testing accuracy and, to maximise fixed and mobile asset efficiency and utilisation.

The process used was very inclusive across the site with many employees involved in the analysis and implementation as well as high level of communication to the staff in each affected area.

Volvo CJD Environment Award

To recognise an individual’s contribution toward the advancement of environmental management in the industry.

Keith Joy

Keith Joy from Tomazos Transport and Mining was the winner of this year's Volvo CJD Environment Award. With no set guidelines in the Northern Territory on rehabilitation practices Keith has worked closely with the local government, environmental groups, mining operators, university students and the local community to rehabilitate the Howard Springs Sand Sheet Heath. This project has set the benchmark for future rehabilitation development, study and sustainability in such sensitive areas and improved guidelines to mining operators

Weir Trio Young Member Award
