IQA Contractor Safety Management Workshop Townsville
The Contractor Safety Management workshop will look at what must be considered when engaging contractors with regard to pre-qualification, onboarding, performance monitoring and review.  The workshop will be followed by an optional NQLD Branch Site Tour & Networking Event.

Date:
Wednesday 29 May 2024
Workshop Time: 9:00am - 1:30pm
Location: Townsville Yacht Club | 1 Plume St, South Townsville

Contractor management involves the management of an external third-party resource working for a company. It encompasses the establishment and implementation of a system that is responsible for handling contractors' health and safety records, insurance information, training programs and specific documents that pertain to the contractor and the business.

The Brady Review revealed that, of the serious accidents examined which occurred in quarries, the number of accidents involving contractors was nearly double the number of accidents involving employees. Contractor management can be a very challenging area and is one often overlooked. Just because a company hires a contractor, doesn’t mean its safety responsibilities are absolved or that the contractor has the correct compliance documentation in order.

Workshop Overview

Under WHS legislation, the principal duty of employers is to provide a working environment for employees that is safe and without risks to health. This duty extends to contractors in relation to matters over which the employer has control.

When contractors are engaged, there are a number of important factors that need to be considered when it comes to effective contractor safety management.  Work arrangements between the two parties need to be clearly defined to deal with these WHS obligations.

This workshop will look at what must be considered when engaging contractors with regard to pre-qualification, onboarding, performance monitoring and performance review.

Site Tour & Networking Event

The Contractor Safety Management workshop will be followed by a site tour of the Townsville Connection Road, networking and refreshments.

About The Townsville Connection Road

The Townsville Connection Road is being upgraded to dual lanes between University Road and Bowen Road Bridge. The project includes upgrades at 3 intersections: Gartrell Drive, Mervyn Crossman Drive/Fairfield Waters Drive and Kokoda Street.

The section of road carries around 24,000 vehicles daily. The surrounding area is experiencing residential and commercial growth, and increased traffic is forecast.

Current Production: The quarry presently holds authorization for an annual extraction of 495,000 tonnes.

Challenges: The quarry faces various challenges, including issues related to dust, floods, neighbouring land uses, and traffic. To assist with the dust, the quarry has installed a plumbed in sprinkler system for dust suppression.

Mobile Crushing Equipment: The quarry pit has an in-pit crusher and conveyor that transports material to the out of pit crushing plant.  It is supported by company-owned PBS-rated truck and dog fleet for efficient transport operations.

PPE:

Mandatory PPE include: long pants, long sleeved hi vis shirt and/or hi vis vest, safety hat & boots.
